About us
AUT is a contemporary New Zealand university focusing on student success, research and industry connectivity. AUT is the third largest university in New Zealand, and has established itself as an institution of global standing and impact. Its success as a university is underpinned by its ability to forge strong partnerships with individuals, institutions and organisations world-wide. These partnerships create opportunities for research collaboration by bringing together the best minds to address critical issues of global importance and deliver outcomes with maximum impact.
By the end of 2014, AUT had more than 26000 students. At the Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies (DCT) we recognise that design as a discipline is central to advancing transdisciplinary learning and research. DCT houses five discipline areas: art and design, communication, computer and mathematical sciences, creative technologies and engineering. The School of Communication Studies offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes spanning a range of industry sectors and specialisms. |
AUT’s journalism programme is the largest in New Zealand, both in terms of faculty and students. The programme’s 10 staff members all have backgrounds in journalism and are actively involved in research as well as teaching. Students benefit from the programme’s close links with the journalism industry – every week working journalists are on campus talking about issues they are facing in their newsrooms. A Journalist in Residence programme includes regular interviews with leading journalists held in the students’ media centre. The largest cohort is students taking the Journalism Major within the School’s Bachelor of Communication Studies degree. In 2014, there are 50 students majoring in journalism for the final year of their programme. A further 20 students are enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies (Journalism Pathway). In both programmes journalism students are reporting and editing across all media platforms (print, online, audio and video), reflecting the changing working practices within the media industries. As well as writing for professional media outlets in Auckland and around the country, students are also working for Te Waha Nui, our news website and award-winning training newspaper. |
During the 2016 World Journalism Education Congress, dedicated reporting and editing teams working on Te Waha Nui will be working to a daily news agenda producing multi-media stories about the event.
